Christmas Tree Made Out Of Decorating Triangles
Build a wood triangle tree or a whole forest of trees for your mantel! This easy Christmas decor idea can be painted and decorated to fit whatever style you love, for Christmas and winter decorating.
Last year we showed you this Ornament Display Tree, and we loved it! The triangle tree shape is just so fun that we had to try it again this year during our 12 Days of Christmas. Only just as the tree outline. We've made three different sizes of triangle wood Christmas decor trees so you can make them and give them as gifts or save them for your mantel!
We also put together a video tutorial to show how to use an angle jig to cut the wide angle needed for the top angles of the wooden Christmas trees, along with some additional options for making the triangle tree into a Christmas ornament holder. Watch here and be sure to subscribe to the Remodelaholic channel for more great DIY tutorials!

The 5-page printable triangle tree building plan includes details for making an angle jig to cut a wide angle and dimensions for 3 different sizes of trees: 12″, 14″, and 20″.

DIY Christmas Decor Triangle Tree
Tools List:
- Miter Saw
- Nail Gun
- 1 1/2″ Brad nails
- Wood Glue
- Sand Paper
- Angle Jig (see plans on how to make it for some of the miter cuts)
Material List:
- 1 x 2 pine board (for triangle) – see note below for needed length
- 1 x 4 pine board (for base) – 4-7 inches per tree
- 2 x 4 stud (optional for angle jig, you could use a 1 x 4 as well)
- Paint or stain
Each 12" triangle tree requires ~32" of 1×2 board; 14" tree requires ~36" of 1×2 board; 20" tree requires ~56" of 1×2 board. We suggest purchasing a bit extra to account for angled cuts.
How to Paint or Stain a Wooden Christmas Tree
After you've built your trees following the woodworking plan, there are lots of options for finishing your wooden tree forest. We spray painted ours for quick and easy color and a metallic shine to go along with our black and gold Christmas decorations.
See more of our black and gold Christmas ideas here.
You could also
- stain the trees like we stained the ornament display tree using a store bought stain
- layer stains to create a rustic reclaimed wood look
- mix and use a homemade stain (no blotches!)
- use our signature color-washing stain technique to stain the wood any color you want
- dry brush the wood trees like the 3D trees and herringbone trees
Using a triangle wood tree to decorate a Christmas mantel or winter vignette
Part of what we love about these trees is that they are so easy to customize to fit whatever style, decorations, and budget you have. The video above shows how we strung plumbing chain to hang ornaments in the triangle tree. You could also
- staple twine in the tree to hang Christmas cards or photos
- hang ornaments as an advent calendar
- string Christmas lights or fairy lights for a lighted wooden tree
- display a wreath, mistletoe, or Christmas swag inside the triangle tree
